Social media is growing exponentially and slowly taking over the throne of becoming the number one media outlet. Isn’t it quite remarkable that a viral YouTube video will give you more publicity than having your own local TV show for a full season? So, how do we really get a growing fanbase with the help of Internet? Taking a look at the numbers and the impact the superstars of social media is having today will make you realize that social media is in fact a powerful tool for artists of all kind.

There are a couple of lessons to be learned from that list – let’s take Justin Bieber as an example. Before he blew up (more than 6 years ago), he had 5 videos up on his YouTube channel before making a Twitter account. His most viewed video had 70k views, which is quite average for any independent underground Artist/DJ/Music Producer/Dancer of 2016. Justin spent about a year to interact with his current fans, and kept uploading new videos. By doing so, it gave him a good online presence and a continous growing fanbase.

This video of a 3 year old little girl crying over Justin Bieber has more than 30 million views on YouTube. The younger generation spends more time finding interesting videos and people on the Internet than they do on TV & radio. It becomes more attaching for the users simply because it bonds a different type of relation with the artist – an authentic feel. Being interactive with your fans at an early stage is a great way to generate loyalty.

Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber’s manager, helped continue building Justin’s online presence. When asking him why Justin was able to break through and turn into an international sensation he replies:

At the end of the day, the secret to the marketing was to keep it organic and authentic. Make the kids realize that it’s theirs. Don’t overproduce the videos. Don’t try and put in special editing. Just let the kids sing and play his guitar and if he’s the real deal the kids will run with it because they’ll feel like it’s theirs, and have their own self-discovery.

Another great thing they did for Justin, was to listen and react to his fanbase. If you’re building a fanbase as an aspiring artist, adapt your content according to your fans and fulfill their wishes. At the end of the day, they’ll be the one supporting you and making sure that you can make a living. There’s nothing more valuable for an independent artist than to get insight of their followers’ needs.

Today, several years later, Justin is still maintaining a great relationship with his enormous fanbase. Consistency is key – maintain the relationship with your followers in order to stay relevant to them and that will spark a growing fanbase.
